Python Job: Lead Data Engineer (Google Cloud, Scala, CI-CD)

Dow Jones is seeking an engineer with extremely strong engineering skills to join a newly formed team, created as part of a strategic initiative that has identified some high growth opportunities for the organization. You'll also be working on market-leading flagship products on the latest in the Scala tech stack.

The team’s overarching goal is to develop a new generation of knowledge products, powered by technologies such as graph databases, ML/AI and cloud computing, aimed at extreme information users, both internally (e.g. in our newsrooms and Data Strategy teams) and externally. The team will seek to interconnect and harness all data and content available to Dow Jones and help our customers make sense in near-real time of how news events are impacting their world.

We are looking for individuals who are able to pivot and adapt on the fly as well as willingness to learn and get one’s hands dirty, including in areas beyond the original remit, are all a must.

Responsibilities

• As part of a cross-functional agile software team, you will design, implement and maintain our web applications in a highly collaborative environment.
• Participate and lead technical discussions about technology, infrastructure and consider the pros/cons of a technology choice based on business value, scalability, maintainability and project delivery performance.
• Support Dow Jones technical cultural values and are capable of driving toward solutions independently, and seeking feedback when appropriate.
• Maintain and share knowledge in emerging technologies and tools in the industry.
• Ability to prioritize and manage work, adhering to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment.
• Give guidance and mentorship where appropriate with your team, and collaborators.
• Participate in technical proposals for data process, storage and serv in batch and streaming environments.

Basic Qualifications

• Extensive software development experience.
• Working knowledge of Scala (preferred) or some of the following technologies: , Python, or JavaScript.
• Experience with cloud technologies usage such as Google Cloud Projects (GCP) (Preferred) but could consider AWS.
• Experience with CI/CD technologies such as Jenkins, Google Cloud Build or TeamCity
• Proven understanding of Computer Science fundamentals including web development, service-oriented architecture, cloud computing, test driven development, and domain driven design.
• BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent.
• Excellent verbal and written English skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in designing streaming and batch pipelines and storage solutions
• Strong experience with Scala or Python
• Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, or Beam/DataFlow.
• Exposure with Docker, Kubernetes or other cloud or container based application deployment a plus (If you don’t have this come to the interview having recently spun up a small web service in Docker or Kubernetes).
